The Garden of Three Wishes
Lily pressed her nose against the bakery window, watching Mrs. Chen arrange something magical on the counter. Three glowing fruits sat in a row—an orange as bright as a tiny sun, a papaya shaped like a smiling moon, and beside them, a bundle of deep green spinach that seemed to shimmer.
"Those aren't ordinary ingredients," Mrs. Chen called, opening the door. "These are from the Garden of Three Wishes. Would you like to see where they grow?"
Lily's eyes widened. "A real garden?"
"Take my hand," said Mrs. Chen, "and remember—magic comes to those who help others."
Suddenly, the bakery dissolved into swirling mist. When it cleared, they stood in a wonderland. Trees with bark like chocolate dripping with caramel hung heavy with oranges that hummed soft melodies. Papayas glowed with inner light, their mottled skin twinkling like star maps. And in the center of it all grew magnificent spinach leaves—each one as tall as Lily, emerald and velvet.
"Every morning," Mrs. Chen explained, "I must pick one of each before sunrise. Only then will the garden grant its blessing."
Lily spotted something small and sad near the spinach patch—a tiny creature with drooping wings, no bigger than her thumb. Its glow was fading.
"It's a wish-bearer," Mrs. Chen gasped. "It's lost its magic! Without it, the garden will wither."
The creature pointed weakly to the very top of the tallest papaya tree. A single golden fruit hung there, just out of reach.
Lily knew what to do. She climbed carefully, her fingers finding holds in the rough bark. Higher and higher she went, until she could stretch out and pluck the golden papaya. But instead of keeping it, she pressed it into the little creature's hands.
"For you," she whispered.
The wish-bearer's wings burst into brilliant light. It danced around Lily three times, sprinkling golden dust. In that moment, all three ingredients—the orange, the papaya, the spinach—began to sing together.
"You chose kindness first," Mrs. Chen smiled, gathering the glowing ingredients into her basket. "That's the secret ingredient that makes my pastries grant wishes."
Back in the bakery, Mrs. Chen baked something special. When Lily took a bite, she tasted sunshine and moonbeams and earth all at once.
"What did you wish for?" Mrs. Chen asked.
Lily grinned, crumbs on her chin. "I wished that every child could have a friend like you."
And somewhere far away, another wish-bearer's wings began to glow.
