The Garden of Sleepy Magic

Lily discovered the secret gate on a Tuesday, right behind her grandmother's old palm tree. The gate shimmered like rainbow bubbles, and when she stepped through, everything changed.

In the middle of a magical garden stood a slow-moving gardener with patchy clothes and moss growing on one shoulder. "Hello," he yawned, stretching his arms very slowly. "I'm Barnaby. They call me a zombie because I move so slowly, but really I'm just under a Very Sleepy Spell."

Lily wasn't scared at all. Barnaby had the kindest eyes she'd ever seen, like warm honey.

"Welcome to my garden," Barnaby said, showing her around. "But you must meet my friends first."

In a crystal-clear pond swam Gilbert, a goldfish with shimmering golden scales. "I grant three wishes per day," Gilbert bubbled. "But only kind wishes. Selfish wishes turn into soap bubbles!"

Behind the pond, a giant bull with velvet-soft horns dozed in the sunshine. "This is Ferdinand," Barnaby whispered. "He's the gentlest bull in all the worlds. He protects the garden from storms."

But the most amazing plant was the magical spinach. Each leaf sparkled with tiny stars.

"This spinach gives you wonderful dreams," Barnaby explained. "One leaf means happy dreams. Two leaves mean adventure dreams. Three leaves..." he lowered his voice mysteriously, "...three leaves let you visit your dreams while you're awake!"

That night, Lily took three leaves of starry spinach. In her dream, she flew through candy clouds on a bicycle made of moonlight with Gilbert, Barnaby, and Ferdinand. They race-carroted through the galaxy and picked stars like apples.

When she woke up, her pockets were full of stardust.

The palm tree in her grandmother's yard now winked at her when she passed. Sometimes, if she listened very carefully, she could hear Barnaby's sleepy laugh and Gilbert's splashing in a pond that existed only in the space between awake and asleep.

And every night, Lily ate exactly three leaves of magical spinach, because the best friends are the ones who visit you in dreams.
