The Garden of Midnight Friends
Lily loved when the moon climbed high into the sky. That was when her cat, Whiskers, would tap on her window with his velvet paw.
"Come on!" Whiskers seemed to say with his green eyes sparkling. "Tonight is special!"
Lily followed her cat into the garden, where something magical was happening. The flowers were glowing, and there—peeking from behind the sunflowers—was a bull.
But this wasn't a scary bull. His name was Barnaby, and he had a flower tucked behind his ear. "I'm hiding," he whispered sadly. "Everyone thinks bulls are fierce. But I just want to plant flowers."
Whiskers purred and rubbed against Barnaby's leg. The bull's eyes widened with wonder.
Then they heard a slow shuffle. From the shadows emerged a zombie—but not the kind from scary movies! This was Ziggy, whose green skin sparkled like emeralds and whose slow movements were careful, not creepy.
"I... I'm looking for friends," Ziggy said softly, holding out a hand that held a beautiful polished stone. "I found this for someone nice."
Lily gasped with delight. "That's the prettiest rock I've ever seen!"
"I'm slow," Ziggy admitted. "That's why I'm called a zombie. But I notice beautiful things because I take my time."
Barnaby the bull stepped forward. "Maybe we could be friends? I could help you reach high branches."
"And I could help you see the little treasures on the ground!" Ziggy smiled.
Whiskers the cat darted between them, purring louder than ever. He was running in circles, his tail creating a rainbow trail in the moonlight.
"He's making a friendship circle!" Lily clapped.
And that night, under the watching moon, three who thought they were too different to belong discovered they belonged together. The gentle bull, the thoughtful zombie, and the magical cat showed Lily that the best friends are often the ones you least expect.
Every night after, Lily would find them in her garden, planting flowers, sharing treasures, and running rainbow circles—no longer alone, no longer misunderstood, just happy being themselves together.
