The Garden of Forgotten Friends

Lily loved her backyard. It was where her imagination ran wild. One afternoon, she wore her favorite purple hat with the silver star on top. It made her feel magical, like a wizard who could talk to animals.

Near the garden pond, she spotted something unusual. A small zombie was sitting by the water, looking sad. He had green skin and ragged clothes, but he didn't look scary—he looked lonely. His name was Zed, and he explained that everyone ran away from him because of how he looked.

"I just want a friend," Zed said quietly.

Lily smiled. "I'll be your friend. And I think someone else wants to meet you too."

She reached into the pond and pulled out her pet goldfish, Goldie, in a bowl. Goldie had been lonely too—she was the only fish in the whole pond. But when Zed peeked at Goldie through the glass, something amazing happened. Goldie didn't swim away. She swam right up to the glass and blew bubbles.

Suddenly, bushes rustled behind them. Out came Barnaby, a giant brown bear with a kind face and a bright red bowtie. He had been watching them. Most people were scared of bears, but Lily knew better.

"Barnaby!" Lily cheered. The bear lumbered over and sat down. Zed gasped—he had never seen a bear so gentle. Barnaby noticed Zed's fear and sat very still, then offered his paw. Zed hesitated, then took it.

"Nobody's ever not been scared of me," Zed whispered.

"Sometimes," Lily said, "the things that seem different or scary are actually the most wonderful friends."

From that day on, the purple hat became more than just a hat. It was their signal. Whenever Lily wore it in the garden, her unusual friends appeared: the lonely zombie, the gentle bear, and the friendly goldfish who could somehow understand everything they said. They had tea parties and adventures, and Zed learned that true friends see your heart, not your appearance.

And if you ever see a purple hat in a garden, look closely. You might just spot a bear having tea with a zombie, while a goldfish watches from her bowl, blowing bubbles of joy.
