The Garden Guardian's Secret
Lily hated spinach. Every dinner, her mother said, "Eat your greens, sweetie. They'll make you strong." But Lily pushed the leaves around her plate, wishing for chocolate instead.
One afternoon, while playing behind the old library, Lily discovered a rusty door hidden under ivy. Inside, a single elevator stood frozen in time. An ancient steel cable stretched upward into darkness.
"Going up!" called a scratchy voice.
A small green figure stepped from the shadows. He had mossy green hair, flowers growing from his pockets, and the friendliest smile Lily had ever seen.
"I'm Zom!" he said. "But people call me zombie because I sleep all winter and wake up in spring."
"You're not scary," said Lily.
Zom laughed. "Of course not! I'm a garden guardian. This elevator goes to the Moon Garden." He handed her a glowing leaf. "Try this. It's magic spinach."
Lily took a tiny bite. Suddenly, she felt lighter! Her hair began to sparkle with tiny stars. She could understand what the birds were saying. She could feel the flowers singing.
"The magic spinach helps you see the hidden world," Zom explained. "But it only works if you believe in yourself."
Together they rode the creaky elevator up, up, up until they reached a garden floating in the sky. Moonflowers bloomed everywhere. Starfruits glowed like little suns. Butterflies with wings of rainbows danced around them.
"This spinach made everything possible," Lily whispered. "I never knew vegetables could be so wonderful."
Zom smiled. "The magic wasn't just in the spinach. The magic was in being brave enough to try something new."
When Lily returned home for dinner, she eagerly ate every bite of spinach on her plate. Her mother looked surprised.
"What changed?" she asked.
Lily touched a tiny moonflower in her pocket. "Sometimes," she said wisely, "the things we think we hate just need a little magic — and a good friend — to show us how wonderful they truly are."
