The Garden Friend
Lily loved her backyard. But she loved the corner behind the old oak tree most of all. That's where her fishbowl sat, home to Goldie, her shiny orange goldfish who would blow bubbles whenever she came near.
One morning, Lily noticed something strange. A papaya fruit had appeared on the ground overnight—bright and yellow-orange like a tiny sun. But papayas didn't grow in her garden. She lived too far north.
"Goldie," she whispered, "someone left us a present."
That night, Lily peeked through her window. She saw something shuffling between the trees. It moved slowly, arms swaying, heading straight for her fishbowl.
Lily held her breath. Was it a monster? A zombie?
The next morning, she found another papaya. And another the day after that. Each one perfectly ripe, each one placed gently beside Goldie's bowl.
On the fourth night, Lily waited outside. When the shuffling shadow appeared, she called out: "Hello?"
The figure froze. Slowly, it turned. It WAS a zombie—or something like one. Pale skin, patchy clothes, messy hair. But this zombie held a basket of papayas.
"I'm... I'm Zara," the zombie whispered. "I live in the old garden shed. I've been asleep for a very long time."
Lily stepped closer. "You bring papayas?"
"They grow in my magical garden," Zara said shyly. "Inside the shed, time works differently. I've been growing them for years. But I was lonely. Then I saw your fish. His colors reminded me of home."
Goldie swam to the surface, blowing happy bubbles.
"Would you like to meet my friends?" Lily asked. Zara's eyes widened.
That afternoon, Zara met the neighborhood children. At first, they were scared. But when she showed them how to make papaya smoothies and told stories about her magical garden, they forgot to be afraid. Goldie swam proudly in his bowl, watching his new friend laugh and play.
Sometimes, Lily thought, the scariest-looking things are just the loneliest. And kindness—like a perfectly ripe papaya—is sweetest when shared with friends.
Now, every evening, you can find Lily, Zara, and all the neighborhood children gathered around the goldfish bowl, sharing papayas and stories under the stars. And Goldie? He's never been happier. After all, he brought them all together—just by being himself.
