The Game That Woke the Garden
Max loved many things, but he loved two things most: his golden dog named Sunny, and the game of padel. Every afternoon after school, they'd play in the driveway. Sunny would chase the ball, barking with joy, her fur shining like sunshine.
One Tuesday, Max's pocket felt heavy. He pulled out something he'd never seen before—an orange that glowed with tiny, sparkling lights. "What kind of orange is this?" Max wondered. Sunny sniffed it and sneezed, making them both laugh.
Suddenly, the orange rolled away, bouncing toward the old garden behind their house. Max and Sunny chased it, but when they reached the garden gate, everything changed.
The garden wasn't empty anymore. Strange figures shuffled between the rosebushes—slow, droopy creatures with gray skin and tired eyes. Zombie gardeners! But they didn't look scary. They looked... lonely. And very, very sleepy.
"Hello?" Max called. "Who are you?"
One zombie looked up. "We're the Sleepy Gardeners," he said slowly. "A magic spell made us tend this garden forever, but we're so tired. We haven't had fun in a hundred years."
Sunny wagged her tail and dropped her favorite padel ball at the zombie's feet.
"That's it!" Max said. "You need to play!"
Max grabbed his padel racket from home and taught the zombies how to hit the ball. At first, they were slow and clumsy. But with each hit, something magical happened. Their gray skin turned pink. Their tired eyes brightened. The zombie gardeners started smiling.
"Play!" they cheered. "Play wakes us up!"
They played padel until sunset, laughing and running. Sunny chased every ball. The glowing orange sat on a fence post, pulsing with warm light.
"Thank you," the lead zombie said, now bright-eyed and rosy-cheeked. "You reminded us that joy breaks every spell."
Max learned something wonderful that day: sometimes, what seems scary is just lonely. And sometimes, a game, a dog, and a little kindness can wake up magic in the most unexpected places.
That night, Max fell asleep dreaming of padel matches under the stars, Sunny curled beside him, the glowing orange sitting on his nightstand, still twinkling with the promise of more adventures to come.
