The Fruit of Unrealized Ambitions

The bull market had turned on them, leaving Marcus staring at his terminal screen at 3 AM, the orange glow painting his face in sickly light. His final trade recommendation—a short position on a tech startup that had since tripled—haunted him more than the whiskey bottle in his drawer. His boss had warned him: 'You're swimming with sharks, son. Don't become chum.' He'd become something worse—irrelevant.

Across the cubicle farm, Sarah was packing her box. The papaya on her desk, brought from home that morning as a symbolic gesture of new beginnings, sat rotting in the fluorescent hum. She'd been the one to call his bluff, to point out that his spreadsheets were more art than science. 'You're predicting bear markets when there aren't any,' she'd said during their confrontation, her voice steady while her hands trembled. 'Some day, Marcus, you'll have to admit that you don't actually see patterns. You see what you need to see.'

The security guard's dog, an ancient golden retriever named Lucky, shuffled past the glass doors, his tags jingling like some twisted lullaby. Marcus had adopted Lucky from a shelter three years ago, after his divorce, after he realized that coming home to an empty apartment was slowly killing him. The dog had been his anchor, his reason to leave the office before midnight, his reminder that some things—unconditional love, the simple joy of a walk in the park—couldn't be quantified or leveraged.

Now Sarah was leaving, and Lucky was getting older, and Marcus was still here, still pretending that next quarter would be different. The papaya's sweet scent filled the cubicle, incongruous and overwhelming. He remembered his father's voice: 'Son, you can't bullshit a bullshitter, but you can bullshit yourself forever.'

Marcus pressed send on his resignation letter. The orange glow on his face suddenly seemed like dawn rather than terminal light. Lucky waited by the door, tags jingling, ready for their last walk through this city of false prophets and second chances.
