The Fruit of Forbidden Summers

bearpapayapoolpadel

The papaya sat on the white porcelain plate, its flesh the color of a mistake made in sunlight. Elena pushed it around with her fork, watching the juice bleed into the tablecloth like a slow betrayal.

She could hear them on the padel court beyond the infinity pool — the rhythmic thwack of racquets, Richard's laugh threading through the morning air. He hadn't noticed she'd stopped coming to breakfast. Or maybe he had, and that was worse.

Three weeks at this corporate retreat. Three weeks of watching her husband transform into someone else — someone who played padel with the CEO's daughter, someone who stayed at the pool until his phone died, someone who came to their villa smelling of coconut and excuses.

The papaya was ripe, its black seeds glistening like tiny accusations. She thought about the bear they'd seen on that hike in Montana, three years ago. How Richard had stood between her and it, heart hammering against her back. "I'd die for you," he'd whispered afterward, his breath still sharp with fear.

Now he wouldn't even meet her eyes over croissants.

"Everything okay, ma'am?" The waiter's voice cut through her thoughts. He refilled her coffee cup, his expression carefully professional.

"Fine," she said. "Just... thinking."

She picked up a piece of papaya, let its sweetness coat her tongue. Outside, Richard scored a point. The CEO's daughter cheered.

That afternoon, while Richard showered after his match, Elena booked a flight home. She left the papaya untouched on the counter, its beautiful rot spreading across the kitchen, something else she wouldn't have to clean up anymore.
