The Fruit of Betrayal

spyhatpoolpapaya

Elena adjusted the brim of her sun hat, watching the papaya-colored sunset bleed across the infinity pool. Below, the water shimmered like liquid glass, catching the last light of day. She shouldn't be here. This wasn't her world—this rooftop sanctuary of the elite, where membership fees cost more than she made in a year.

Marcus appeared behind her, fresh from the locker room, droplets still clinging to his chest. He looked good. Too good. Two years of marriage and she still felt that ache in her throat whenever he looked at her like that.

'You came,' he said, pressing a cold drink into her hand.

'I came.' She took the glass without meeting his eyes. 'The corporate retreat, Marcus. Really? That's your cover story now?'

He sighed, sliding onto the chaise beside her. 'It's not a story. I really did get promoted. Regional director.' He said it like it should mean something to her. Like she hadn't spent the last six months watching him come home at midnight, smelling of hotel soap and someone else's perfume.

'I know,' she said softly. 'I checked your email.' The admission hung between them, heavier than the humid evening air.

Marcus went still. 'You what?'

'Not as your wife. As what I am.' She finally looked at him. 'The same thing I was when we met. The same thing you hired me to be, three years ago, when you needed someone to investigate your business partners.' She reached into her bag and pulled out a folded document—corporate records she'd pulled from his encrypted drive that morning. 'I've been tracking the embezzlement, Marcus. Not you. Your boss.'

He stared at her, then began to laugh. Dark, genuine laughter that echoed across the empty pool deck. 'You've been spying on my boss? This whole time?'

'That's the job, honey. That's always been the job.' She took a sip of her drink. 'I just forgot to tell you the client was you.'

Marcus kissed her then, tasting like chlorine and expensive whiskey and the papaya he'd eaten for breakfast. 'God, I love you,' he whispered against her mouth. 'You're insane.'

'And you're under investigation,' she reminded him, but she was smiling now. 'Corporate espionage, Marcus. Your boss has been funnelling money offshore for years. I turned everything over to the authorities this morning.'

He pulled back, eyes wide. 'You what?'

'Someone had to make an honest man of you.' She adjusted her hat, tilting it forward. 'Besides, if he goes to prison... that makes you regional director for real.'

Marcus laughed again, wrapping his arms around her waist as the last light vanished from the sky. 'Remind me never to cross you, Elena.'

'Sweetheart,' she said, settling against his chest. 'You already did.'
