The Fruit of Betrayal

Maria sat alone at the hotel bar, slicing through the ripe papaya with deliberate precision. The juice stained her fingers like guilt. Three weeks ago, she'd been a happily married corporate attorney in Chicago. Now she was in Singapore, waiting to meet the man who'd hired her as a corporate spy—the same man whose marriage she'd unknowingly helped dismantle.

Her iPhone buzzed on the counter. A text from David: 'Thinking about baseball. Remember our first date at Wrigley?' She typed a reply, then deleted it. That was the problem with destroying a marriage from the inside—you began to remember the tenderness too late.

The project had seemed so clean at first. Extract trade secrets from a pharmaceutical competitor, 2.5 million in offshore accounts. She'd told herself it was victimless, just another corporate shell game. Then she'd met Elena, the target's wife, at a charity gala. They'd bonded over expired visas and existential dread, two foreign women drowning in Singapore's expat ocean.

Now Elena was leaving her husband, citing 'zombie feelings'—that numb paralysis where you stay married because leaving feels too exhausting. Maria had been the catalyst, sleeping with the husband to secure access, never expecting Elena to find out. Never expecting the other woman to thank her for it.

The elevator chimed. David stepped out, wearing the same cologne he'd worn to their first baseball game. He smiled, and Maria felt papaya stick to the back of her throat. He thought she was waiting for passion. He didn't know she'd already forwarded everything to his competitors. Corporate spy, meet corporate spy.

'Someone's been busy,' he said, gesturing to her phone.

Maria stood up. 'I'm not the only one.'
