The Fruit of Betrayal

spysphinxpapayacable

Elena should have known something was wrong when Marcus started ordering papaya every morning. He'd always hated the fruit, called it 'mushy ambiguity,' but three weeks into their Belize vacation, he was slicing it with methodical precision, juice staining his fingers like guilt.

They were supposed to be reconnecting. Two successful corporate lawyers taking a sabbatical to save their seven-year marriage. Instead, Elena found herself watching him through the crack in the bathroom door, counting his pills, scrolling through his phone when he showered. She'd become the very thing she'd spent her career defending against—a spy in her own marriage.

'What are you really doing here?' she asked him on their last night, when the hotel's cable went out during a storm, leaving them with nothing but each other and the sound of rain drumming against the windows.

Marcus set down his papaya. 'You mean besides trying to remember why I fell in love with you?'

'I mean besides the late-night calls. The encrypted emails on your work laptop. The way you flinch when I touch you.' She gestured at the blank television screen. 'Even the cable's given up on us.'

He laughed, a bitter sound. 'You want to know the truth, El? You're the one who became a sphinx. All riddles and silence, impossible to read. I stopped being able to distinguish what you were hiding from what you were protecting.'

'So you found someone else.' Not a question.

'So I stopped trying to solve the riddle.' He picked up his knife again. 'The papaca wasn't for me. It was for her. She's Belizean. She thinks I'm adventurous.'

The storm raged outside. Elena felt something crack open in her chest, not quite pain, not quite relief.

'Spy,' she whispered. 'That's what you've been calling me, isn't it?'

'No,' said Marcus, and for the first time in months, he looked her in the eye. 'That's what we both became.'
