The Fruit of Betrayal

padelpapayaspyfox

The papaya sat on the kitchen counter, its skin mottled with yellow and green like a bruise that wouldn't heal. Elena had bought it yesterday at the market, before she knew. Before everything curdled.

They met at the padel club three years ago — Elena, a corporate attorney who played with ruthless precision, and Marcus, the charismatic venture capitalist who somehow always found himself exactly where the ball wasn't. His game was all improvisation and charm. He called it instinct. She should have recognized it for what it was: hunting.

"You're like a fox," she'd told him once, laughing, after he'd somehow predicted her serve three times in a row. "Always one step ahead."

"Just observant," he'd said, that lazy smile that never quite reached his eyes.

Now she sat at their marble island, scrolling through the encrypted files she'd found on his backup drive. Not just venture investments. Client lists, proprietary algorithms, product roadmaps — all from her firm's biggest competitor. Marcus hadn't been playing padel with her competitors. He'd been playing her.

The papaya's sweetness mocked her. She remembered cutting one open their first morning together, the juice staining their fingers, how he'd laughed and licked it off hers like something sacramental. All performance. All recon.

Her phone buzzed. Marcus: "Padel at 7? Coach is waiting."

Elena sliced through the papaya's flesh, the knife sinking soft and yielding. She'd play. She'd play better than ever. And when he least expected it — when he thought he had her cornered, thinking himself the clever fox — she'd reveal that she knew exactly what he was.

The papaya tasted like revenge.
