The Friendship Pyramid
Marcus stared at the cafeteria's social pyramid like it was a mathematical equation he couldn't solve. Seniors at the top, sophomores in the middle, freshmen scattered at the bottom like lost puzzle pieces. His first week at Northwood High, and he'd already claimed the worst seat: next to the trash cans, where the smell of old milk mixed with anxiety.
"Bro, you're overthinking it," said Jasmine, sliding her tray across from him. She'd been his oldest friend since third grade, back when they'd bonded over sharing fruit snacks and making fun of Justin's inability to spell 'because'. "Just be cool. Act like you belong."
Easy for her to say. Jasmine had already been recruited by the volleyball team. She was climbing the pyramid while Marcus was still stuck at base camp.
His phone buzzed. A text from his mom: "Cooper got out again. Come home ASAP."
Cooper. The family dog. A golden retriever with escape artist skills that would put Houdini to shame. Marcus groaned so loud that the table of lacrosse guys actually looked over. No, wait—they were looking at the girl walking past them. Bella, with the perfect hair and the Instagram feed that made Marcus's life look like a documentary about boredom.
"You good?" Jasmine asked.
"Cooper's running loose again. I gotta bail."
"Again? That dog is literally your spirit animal."
Marcus grabbed his backpack and pushed through the cafeteria doors. Outside, the autumn air hit him like a splash of cold water. He spotted Cooper immediately—of course the dog had made his way to the school, tail wagging like he owned the place. A group of girls were already taking selfies with him.
"Cooper!" Marcus whistled. The dog trotted over like nothing was wrong, tongue lolling out like this was all part of his master plan. And then—horror of horrors—Cooper made a beeline for Bella, who was sitting on a bench reading.
The dog plopped his head right in her lap. She laughed, scratching behind his ears. Marcus had to walk over and ruin it. "Sorry, he's... really friendly."
"He's adorable!" Bella looked up, and for the first time all week, someone actually saw him. "You're Marcus, right? English class?"
"Yeah."
"Your dog is way cooler than half the people at this school."
Cooper chose that moment to shake his coat vigorously, spraying dog water all over both of them. Bella laughed so hard she almost fell off the bench. Marcus stood there, dripping wet, grinning like an idiot.
Maybe the social pyramid wasn't so steep after all. Sometimes you just needed a dog to knock it over.
