The Friendly Zombie's Orange Gift
Lily was playing in her backyard when she spotted something strange peeking from behind the big oak tree. It was green and bumpy, and when it stepped out, she gasped—it was a zombie! But this zombie wasn't scary like in the movies. He wore a bright orange scarf around his neck and had the kindest eyes Lily had ever seen.
"Hello there," said the zombie, his voice sounding like autumn leaves crunching. "My name is Zed, and I'm looking for my cat, Pumpkin. Have you seen him?"
Lily's eyes went wide. A zombie with a pet cat? This was the most wonderful thing she'd ever heard!
"I haven't seen a cat," Lily said, "but my friend Emma has a big fluffy cat that loves oranges. Maybe that's Pumpkin?"
Zed's face lit up. "Pumpkin DOES love oranges! He's always sneaking them from my garden."
Just then, a tiny orange cat came bounding around the corner, chasing a butterfly. But the cat stopped suddenly and arched its back, hissing at something in the bushes. A giant bear emerged, looking confused and sleepy.
Lily wanted to run, but Zed stood calmly. "That's just Barnaby," he said. "He's my friend. He helps me find the sweetest oranges in the forest."
The bear, who looked more like a big cuddly teddy bear than a scary one, sat down and held out his paw. In it was the perfect orange pumpkin—orange, round, and glowing with magic.
"Pumpkin cat!" Zed called. The orange cat leaped into the zombie's arms, purring so loudly it sounded like a tiny motor.
"Would you like an orange?" Zed asked Lily. "Barnaby picked it specially for new friends."
Lily took the orange. When she peeled it, it was filled with tiny stars that sparkled in the sunlight. One bite tasted like sunshine and adventure.
"Not all zombies are scary," Zed said softly. "And not all bears are fierce. Sometimes, the most surprising friends are the best kind."
Lily smiled, popping another starry orange slice into her mouth. She couldn't wait to tell Emma about the zombie, the bear, and the magical orange cat who taught her that friends come in all shapes, sizes, and colors—even green and bumpy ones.
From that day on, whenever Lily saw something strange or different, she remembered Zed and Barnaby. And she always approached it with wonder instead of fear, ready for a new magical friendship to begin.
