The Friendly Zombie's Garden
Lily loved visiting her grandmother's old house in the countryside. Every summer, she'd explore the magical backyard where flowers grew taller than her head and butterflies danced in rainbow swirls. But this year, something was different.
A scruffy little dog with one floppy ear and bright golden eyes trotted up to her, wagging his tail so hard his whole body wiggled. "Woof!" he barked, as if saying hello. Lily knelt down and patted his soft head. "Hello, new friend!"
Suddenly, a calico cat with the brightest orange patches pounced from behind a sunflower, landing right in front of the dog. Instead of running away, the cat started purring like a tiny motor and rubbed against the dog's legs. The dog licked the cat's ear, and they became instant friends.
"That's strange," Lily whispered. "Usually dogs and cats don't get along."
That's when she saw it. Behind the old oak tree, something green and leafy was slowly walking toward them. Lily's eyes grew wide. It looked like a person, but it was made entirely of plants! Vines curled around its arms, moss covered its face like a beard, and flowers bloomed from its hair.
"Is that... a zombie?" Lily wondered, remembering the stories her older brother told her.
But this wasn't a scary zombie at all. As it shuffled closer, Lily saw it was leaving a trail of beautiful flowers wherever it walked. The plant-person smiled with a face made of peaceful moss and kind eyes.
"Don't be afraid," it said in a voice like rustling leaves. "I'm the Garden Guardian. I was created from magic seeds planted long ago."
The Guardian explained that every hundred years, the garden's magic brought it to life to plant new flowers and help all the animals become friends. That's why the dog and cat were playing together!
"Will you help me?" the Guardian asked. "The garden needs more love to grow beautiful things."
Lily spent the rest of the summer helping the Garden Guardian plant seeds, water flowers, and care for all the animals. She learned that sometimes things that seem strange at first can turn out to be wonderful. The dog and cat became best friends, and Lily discovered that the real magic wasn't in the zombie guardian at all—it was in friendship, kindness, and believing in impossible things.
When summer ended, the Guardian returned to the earth, promising to return when the garden needed magic again. Lily waved goodbye, knowing she'd made friends she'd never forget—and learned that the best adventures often start with being brave enough to say hello to something new.
