The Friendly Garden Ghost

Lily loved her backyard garden more than anything in the world. Every day after school, she'd come home and check on her plants—talking to them, watering them, and watching them grow taller. But one autumn afternoon, something magical happened.

She was running through the garden when she spotted something strange near the spinach patch. A lumpy, leaf-covered creature was slowly shuffling between the rows, moving like a sleepy zombie from her storybooks. But instead of feeling scared, Lily felt curious.

"Hello?" she called out softly. The creature froze. It was covered in moss and leaves, with bright orange flowers tucked behind what looked like ears. "Are you... a zombie?" Lily asked, remembering the monsters from Halloween.

The creature shook its head slowly and let out a tiny, sad moan. Then it pointed at the spinach plants and made a munching motion.

"Oh!" Lily gasped. "You're hungry!" She ran to the kitchen and came back with a bowl of fresh spinach leaves. The creature's eyes lit up—it had the most brilliant orange eyes Lily had ever seen! It munched happily, and with every bite, it stood a little straighter.

"My name is Sprout," it finally said, its voice sounding like rustling leaves. "I'm a garden guardian, but I've been so weak without my favorite snack. Thank you for helping me."

From that day on, Lily and Sprout became best friends. Sprout showed Lily how to make flowers bloom overnight just by singing to them, and Lily made sure Sprout always had plenty of spinach. Together, they discovered that the scariest things sometimes turn out to be the most wonderful friends—if you're brave enough to say hello first.

And sometimes, the best adventures start with running toward something mysterious instead of away from it.
