The Friendliest Zombie
Lily loved spending summer days at her grandma's house by the beach. Her favorite spot was under the giant palm tree that swayed in the warm breeze. But this summer, something magical happened.
One morning, Lily heard strange noises coming from behind the palm. "Groan... bounce... groan... bounce." Curious, she peeked around the tree and gasped!
There stood a green-skinned zombie, but he wasn't scary at all. He was hitting a ball against the palm tree trunk with a wooden padel racket!
"Hello?" Lily called out softly.
The zombie jumped and dropped his racket. "Oh! Um, hello." He sounded shy, not spooky. "I'm Zed."
"I'm Lily. What are you doing?"
Zed looked down at his feet. "Playing padel. But everyone runs away when they see me. They think I'm scary."
Lily's golden retriever, Max, trotted over and happily sniffed Zed's hand. The zombie's face lit up with surprise.
"Max likes you!" Lily said. "Want to play padel with us?"
Zed's eyes widened. "Really? Nobody ever wants to play with a zombie."
"Well, you're not scary," Lily said firmly. "You're just Zed, and you like padel. That's cool!"
They played all afternoon under the palm tree. Zed was amazing at padel! He taught Lily tricks, and she taught him that not everything scary-looking is actually scary. When Max chased the ball, Zed laughed so hard he fell over in the sand.
By sunset, other children gathered to watch. "Is that... a zombie?" whispered a boy named Mateo.
"Yes! This is Zed, and he's our friend," Lily announced proudly. "He's the best padel player ever!"
Soon, everyone was playing together. The zombie who had been lonely now had the best day of his life.
As they sat under the palm tree eating ice cream, Zed smiled his crooked smile. "Thank you, Lily. You taught me something important."
"What's that?" she asked.
"That friendship doesn't care what you look like," Zed said. "It only matters what's in your heart."
Lily hugged her new friend. Under the twinkling stars, with Max curled between them, they knew this was the beginning of many wonderful adventures together.
Sometimes the best friends come in the most unexpected packages.
