The Friendliest Zombie
Lily loved summer, especially when her dad took her to the community pool. But today, something strange caught her eye near the old baseball field behind the pool fence. A greenish figure shuffled slowly, its wild hair sticking up like messy seaweed. A zombie!
Lily should have been scared. Everyone knew zombies were scary monsters from movies. But this one looked different — sad, even. It held a baseball glove backward and stared longingly at the kids playing.
'Are you lost?' Lily called out, stepping closer.
The zombie jumped. Its name was Zed, and it had been wandering for two hundred years, searching for friends who weren't afraid of its green skin and messy hair.
'I just want to play baseball,' Zed said softly. 'But everyone runs away.'
Lily smiled. 'I'll teach you!'
Every day that summer, Lily met Zed by the baseball field. Zed wasn't scary at all — it was gentle and funny, tripping over its own feet and telling jokes from the olden days. Lily's friends, Marcus and Tara, soon joined them. None of them cared about Zed's green skin or wild hair. They saw a friend.
One afternoon, Zed invited them to a hidden spot deep in the woods. A crystal pool sparkled under the sunlight, filled with magical water that showed you your truest self.
'Go ahead,' Zed said. 'Look.'
Lily peered into the water. She didn't see a girl with brown hair and freckles. She saw kindness, courage, and someone who loved making friends. Marcus saw his artistic heart. Tara saw her brave spirit. And when Zed looked, it saw itself not as a monster, but as a friend.
'My hair isn't messy,' Zed whispered, 'It's beautiful. Just like me.'
The baseball game that afternoon was magical. Zed hit a home run! All the other kids cheered, never knowing their teammate was a real zombie.
That summer, Lily learned something wonderful: true friends don't care about green skin, wild hair, or being different. They care about kindness, laughter, and having someone to share a baseball game with. And sometimes, the scariest-looking creatures make the best friends of all.
