The Friend Under the Palm Tree
Lily loved the old palm tree in her backyard. Its leaves whispered secrets in the wind, and its trunk felt like a wise, wrinkled grandfather. Every afternoon, she'd sit beneath it, reading or playing games on her iPhone.
One day, something strange happened. A green hand poked out from behind the palm tree. Then another. Then a round face with button eyes appeared.
"Hello," said the creature. It looked a bit like a zombie from Lily's favorite video game, but friendlier. Like someone who'd been sleeping for a long time and just woken up stretching.
Lily wasn't scared. She felt curious. "I'm Lily. What's your name?"
"I don't remember," the zombie said, sitting down beside her. "But I like your palm tree. It reminds me of home."
That was the beginning of a beautiful friendship. The zombie—Lily called him Zed—loved hearing about her world. He was fascinated by her iPhone, giggling at the colorful games and funny videos.
"In my time, we had stories," Zed said. "But this... this is magic in your palm!"
Zed had magic too. He could make flowers bloom with just a touch, and the palm tree seemed to glow brighter when he was near.
But the best thing Zed did was teach Lily something important. "Being different doesn't mean being scary," he told her. "What matters is what's inside your heart."
Lily realized Zed was right. Her new friend looked different, but he was kind, funny, and loyal. That's what made someone special.
Every day after school, Lily ran to the palm tree. She'd show Zed new things on her iPhone, and he'd show her the magic in ordinary things—a butterfly's wings, a rainbow after rain, the way stars twinkled like old friends saying hello.
They were an unlikely pair: a girl with her glowing screen and a gentle creature from who-knows-where. But under the swaying palm tree, they were just two friends sharing wonder, adventure, and the joy of discovering that the best friendships often come from the most unexpected places.
