The Friend Inside the Glowing Screen
Lily sat curled on her bedroom floor, the old iPhone her parents gave her glowing softly in her hands. She'd just moved to a new town and hadn't made any friends yet. The games were fun, but they couldn't keep her company like a real person could.
One rainy afternoon, a strange app appeared on the screen – one she'd never downloaded before. Curious, Lily tapped it. The screen swirled with rainbow colors, and suddenly a tiny face popped out – a small, glowing creature with wings like a dragonfly and eyes full of worry.
"Help!" the creature squeaked. "I'm running from the Shadow Giants!"
Before Lily could answer, her bedroom filled with sparkling stars. She felt herself getting smaller and smaller, tumbling right through the screen until she landed on soft purple grass beside the tiny creature.
"I'm Pip," said the little friend, grabbing Lily's hand. "We have to keep running!"
Together they sprinted through meadows of singing flowers and forests with trees made of crystal. Lily had never enjoyed running before, but beside Pip, she felt as light as air. Her feet barely touched the ground, and the wind rushed past her ears like a happy song.
"Where are we running to?" Lily called out, laughing.
"The Sunflower Palace!" Pip pointed to a golden castle ahead. "The Shadows can't enter there."
The Shadow Giants were close now – dark shapes stretching across the ground. But Lily and Pip ran faster, side by side, their hearts beating like drums. They burst through the golden gates just as the first shadows reached them, dissolving instantly in the palace's warm light.
Pip hugged Lily tight. "You saved me! Running alone is scary, but running with a friend makes you brave."
Pip pressed a tiny sunflower seed into Lily's palm. "This will remind you – you're never truly alone."
Lily woke up in her bedroom, the sunflower seed warm in her hand. The iPhone showed only her regular apps now, but something had changed. She didn't feel lonely anymore.
The next day at school, Lily saw a new girl sitting alone at lunch. Remembering how wonderful it felt to run beside Pip, she walked over and said, "Would you like to sit together?"
By afternoon, Lily and Emma were running through the park, laughing as they raced to the playground. And sometimes, when the sunlight caught the sunflower seed in Lily's pocket just right, she could almost see Pip's wings shining inside it, winking back at her.
That night, Lily fell asleep with a smile, the warm seed on her nightstand. Somewhere between dreams and waking, she heard Pip's voice whisper, "See? Friendship is the real magic."
