The Friday Night Sphinx

Maya pressed her back against the cold gym wall, phone glowing in her lap. The freshman pyramid scheme wasn't literal, obviously, but the social hierarchy at Northwood High worked just like one: the popular kids at the top, everyone else supporting them from below, and she was currently stuck somewhere in the middle layers, paying in emotional labor she couldn't afford.

"You're overthinking it," Jordan whispered, sliding down beside her. His signature move – appearing when she least wanted him to, disappearing when she actually needed something. Classic Jordan behavior, weirdly consistent like her cat Luna's habit of knocking things off counters at 3 AM.

"I'm not overthinking it," Maya snapped. "Tyler literally called me 'maya who?' in front of everyone. That's not a pyramid scheme, that's straight-up hostile."

The gym doors swung open and Chloe walked in – the Sphinx herself. Mysterious, impossible to read, and apparently the only person who knew what was actually going on at this school. Chloe had this way of looking at you like she knew your deepest secret and found it mildly amusing.

"Cat got your tongue, Maya?" Chloe appeared in front of them, snapping gum. "Tyler's an idiot. Everyone knows that."

Maya blinked. "Wait – you heard that?"

"Honey, everyone heard that." Chloe flipped her hair. "Here's some free advice: stop trying to climb the pyramid and start your own structure. Much better view from the top when you build it yourself."

Jordan snorted. "Did she just quote inspirational Instagram captions at us?"

Chloe winked and disappeared into the crowd, leaving Maya with her phone buzzing in her hand. New notification from Tyler: sorry about earlier, nervous. wanna hang?

Maya stared at the screen, then at Jordan, then at Chloe's retreating figure in her shimmer dress that probably cost more than Maya's entire wardrobe.

"You know what?" Maya stood up, smoothing her dress. "You're right. I'm done climbing."

"And?" Jordan raised an eyebrow.

"And I'm gonna go dance with the Sphinx instead. Figure out her deal."

"Bold strategy," Jordan called after her. "What if she's actually just weird and not deep at all?"

Maya grinned over her shoulder. "Even better. I love a mystery."
