The Friday Night Pyramid

Maya dragged herself through the front door feeling like a certified zombie. Three hours of AP History cram session followed by dance practice would do that to a person. Her phone buzzed — group chat blowing up about Jordan's party tonight.

"You coming?" read Chen's text. "It's gonna be lit."

Maya stared at her reflection. Dark circles under her eyes, hair attempting to escape her bun. The social pyramid at school towered in her mind — Jordan and the popular crowd at the peak, everyone else scattered below trying not to tumble into the oblivion of "uncool."

Her dog, Buster, nudged her hand with his wet nose. The only guy who consistently showed affection without an agenda.

"You're right, Bud," she sighed. "What's the worst that could happen?"

Thirty minutes later, Maya stood in Jordan's crowded kitchen, clutching a Solo cup like her life depended on it. Someone had constructed a literal pyramid out of red cups in the center of the island. Beer pong tournaments were serious business here.

Then it happened. Her elbow bumped the table edge.

The orange soda she'd been nursing splashed across the white tablecloth, directly under the carefully constructed cup tower. Time seemed to freeze. The pyramid wobbled, tipped, and collapsed in a spectacular cascade of plastic cups and sticky liquid.

Everyone stared.

Maya's face burned hotter than a thousand suns. This was it. Social suicide. Complete and total.

Then Jordan started laughing. Not mean laughing — actual, genuine, doubled-over laughing.

"That was literally the most epic fail I've ever seen," Jordan gasped. "Someone get Maya a refill. That's legendary."

The tension broke. People were chuckling, high-fiving, someone handed her a fresh cup. Suddenly Maya wasn't the zombie girl who ruined the party. She was the girl who took down the pyramid.

She texted Chen under the table: "Actually yeah. It's kinda lit."

Buster would be proud. Sometimes you just have to knock things over to see where you really stand.
