The Friday Night Identity Crisis
Maya stared at her reflection, fingers tangling in her frizzy brown hair. It was SUPPOSED to be sleek and perfect for Tyler's party tonight, but instead it looked like she'd stuck her finger in an electrical socket. AGAIN.
"You're overthinking it," her best friend Priya said, sprawled across Maya's bed while scrolling TikTok. "Your hair's fine. You're fine. Tyler's not gonna care if your hair's got some frizz."
Maya's golden retriever, Buster, nudged her hand with his wet nose, sensing her stress. She scratched behind his ears automatically. "Easy for you to say. You're not the one who's been obsessing over Tyler Evans since seventh grade."
"First of all, GROSS. Second, you literally have a vitamin C glow serum thingy on your vanity. Use it. Confidence is literally just skincare and pretending you know what you're doing."
Maya sighed and reached for the serum. She'd bought it because an influencer said it gave you that 'lit-from-within' look, but so far it mostly just made her face feel sticky.
Outside, thunder rumbled. A storm was rolling in.
"Perfect," Maya muttered. "Guess the party's gonna be canceled anyway."
"Or," Priya sat up, eyes gleaming, "we could just do it."
"Do what?"
"That thing you've been talking about for MONTHS. The chop. The pixie cut. The 'I'm done trying to look like everyone else' cut."
Maya's heart did that thing where it forgot how to beat properly. She'd wanted to cut her hair short since freshman year, but her mom said it was 'too drastic' and she'd 'regret it' and what if Tyler thought it was weird?
But then—
—lightning flashed, illuminating her bathroom mirror in a stark white flash. And in that moment, she saw it: herself, ACTUALLY herself, not the version she'd been curating for someone else.
"Get the scissors," she said.
Priya whooped and bolted upright. Buster started barking, tail thumping against the cabinet.
"You sure?" Priya asked, holding up the craft scissors they used for posters.
Maya looked at her reflection one last time—really looked. "Yeah. I'm done performing. I want to recognize the person in the mirror."
The first snip was terrifying. The second was freeing. By the time she'd finished, her bathroom floor was covered in brown drifts and her head felt light. LITERALLY light.
She looked different. She looked like HERSELF.
"Maya," Priya breathed. "You look incredible."
Buster licked her ankle, approving.
Her phone buzzed. A text from Tyler: u still coming tonight?
Maya grinned, running her hand through her short, choppy, perfect hair. She grabbed the vitamin serum—why not, right now she felt like she could glow on her own—and applied it.
"Yeah," she texted back. "I'll be there."
Some nights change everything. This was one of them.
