The Friday Night Disaster

The plan was simple: look effortless, act chill, maybe finally get Miles to notice me existed beyond 'that quiet girl in AP Bio.' Instead, I found myself hiding in a bathroom at Jake's house party while someone's pet **goldfish** stared at me from its bowl like it knew exactly how much I was cringe.

"You coming out or what?" my best friend Kai texted. I'd been in here for twenty minutes avoiding:

a) The girl who'd worn the exact same **hat** as me (green beanie, seriously?

b) The group playing spin the bottle, because obviously

c) Miles, who'd been giving me looks all night but I was too scared to approach him

The bathroom door flew open. Kai burst in. "Bro, you have to see this. Some guy showed up in a literal **bear** costume. Full furry suit. At a high school party."

"A furry? At Jake's?"

"Not even — he's just being chaotic. It's lowkey iconic." Kai grabbed my arm. "Also, that **cat** you liked on my Instagram story? Its owner is here. The guy. The one with the curly hair. He's asking about you."

"WHAT? Why didn't you lead with that?"

"Because BEAR COSTUME. Priorities."

I took a deep breath, smoothed my hair, checked my reflection. Okay. Fine. Maybe tonight wasn't going according to plan. Maybe the hat doppelgänger was still out there living her best life while I'd spent half the party hiding in a bathroom with a judgmental fish.

But somewhere beyond this door was a guy who liked my Instagram stories about cats, and a person in a bear costume who was absolutely killing it socially, and my best friend who'd somehow made everything feel manageable.

"Okay," I said. "Let's do this."

"That's the energy!" Kai fist-bumped the air. "Main character energy only."

We walked out together. I spotted Curly Hair Guy across the room. He smiled.

The goldfish swam lazily in its bowl, no longer judging, just vibing.

Sometimes the best nights aren't the ones you plan. Sometimes they're the ones where everything goes wrong, but somehow, that's exactly what makes them right.
