The Friday Night Dead Zone

Maya's hair had to be perfect. It always had to be perfect. She spent forty-five minutes with the straightening iron, creating sleek dark waves that fell just right against her shoulders, because tonight was Chloe's party and everyone would be there, including Jayden, who'd finally noticed her in third period English this week.

"You look amazing, as always," her little brother Leo said, sprawled on the couch playing video games. "Total zombie mode since you've been in the bathroom for, like, ever."

"Shut up, Leo." Maya grabbed her iPhone from the charger, checking her reflection one last time. The cable was fraying at the ends—she'd been meaning to ask her mom for a new one, but between honors classes and track practice and maintaining her streak of posting daily aesthetic photos, things slipped through the cracks.

She was halfway down the block when her phone died. 12%. She'd forgotten to check the percentage. Now she was walking to Chloe's house without music, without notifications, without anything to distract her from the knot forming in her stomach.

The anxiety hit hard. What if people were already talking about her? What if someone posted something ugly and she couldn't see it? What if Jayden texted and she missed it?

Maya turned back, fingers trembling. She needed her phone. She needed to be connected.

Mrs. Chen from next door was outside, walking her hairless cat. "Oh, Maya! This is Cleopatra. She's a sphinx cat—no fur at all, but she's the sweetest thing. Would you like to pet her?"

The cat was wrinkled and naked and completely unapologetic about it. She blinked at Maya with enormous eyes, then head-butted Maya's hand with surprising force.

"She doesn't care what anyone thinks," Maya said, scratching behind the cat's enormous ears. "She's just... herself."

"Exactly that, dear. Some of us spend hours becoming what we think others want. Cleopatra never bothered with that nonsense." Mrs. Chen smiled. "Your hair looks beautiful, by the way. But you know what? It looked just as nice when you came running back here in a panic. Sometimes the perfect version isn't the real one."

Maya's hand went to her hair. The perfectly straightened strands were already beginning to frizz in the humid evening air. And for the first time in months, she didn't immediately reach for her phone to document the imperfection.

She left her phone on the charger. She walked to Chloe's party with frizzy hair and zero notifications and a strange, light feeling in her chest. Like being awake for the first time in forever.

Jayden was there. He smiled when she walked in, her hair wild and her pockets empty of the device that usually ruled her life. "Hey. You look... real tonight."

Maya smiled back, really smiled, no filter needed. "Yeah. I think I finally am."
