The Fox Who Spied with His Heart

Rusty was no ordinary fox. His bright orange hair stuck up in tufts all over his head, making him look like he'd just rolled down a grassy hill — which he usually had. But Rusty had a secret. He was a spy.

Not a sneaky spy who stole secrets. No, Rusty was a kindness spy.

Every night, he would creep through the village and peek through windows, watching for children who looked lonely or sad. He had a special gift for finding exactly who needed a friend.

One evening, Rusty discovered something amazing behind the old library. A thick black cable stretched from the building into the ground, humming with a mysterious glow. When Rusty's bushy tail brushed against it, he heard something wonderful.

*"I wish I had someone to play with,"* whispered a voice through the cable.

Rusty's ears perked up. The cable was carrying wishes!

He followed the cable through gardens and alleys until he reached a house where a small girl sat alone by her window, her braided hair falling over her face as she read a book.

Rusty knew exactly what to do.

The next morning, the girl found a beautiful orange feather on her windowsill. She looked up to see a friendly fox face watching her from the garden. Rusty winked and trotted off, inviting her to follow.

She followed him through the meadow, over a sparkling brook, and into a magical clearing where other children were playing. They had all found orange feathers too.

"Are you the one who left them?" the girl asked Rusty.

The fox nodded his fluffy head proudly.

From that day on, Rusty the fox used his cable of wishes to bring lonely children together. And the best spies, he discovered, were the ones who helped others find friendship.

Sometimes the bravest thing you can do is help someone else be brave too.
