The Fox Who Spied on Dreams
Lily had the most tangled hair in the whole world. Every morning, her brush would get stuck in the wild brown curls that bounced around her head like excited springs.
"It's a bird's nest!" her brother laughed.
But Lily loved her messy hair. Because on summer nights, when the moon shone through her window, something magical would happen.
Behind her house was an old swimming pool. But no one had used it for years. Now it was filled with rainwater and reflections. Lily called it her Moon Pool.
One night, while everyone else slept, Lily tiptoed outside in her bare feet. The grass was cool and ticklish between her toes. She sat by the edge of the Moon Pool and watched the stars dance on the water's surface.
A rustling sound made her jump. From the bushes came the most beautiful fox she had ever seen. Its fur was the color of autumn leaves - bright orange with white-tipped hairs that glowed like tiny stars.
The fox didn't run away. Instead, it sat beside Lily and dipped one paw into the Moon Pool.
"You're here early," said a voice.
Lily looked around. "Who said that?"
"I did," replied the fox. "My name is Rusty. I'm the night spy."
"A spy?" Lily's eyes grew wide. "What do you spy on?"
"Dreams," said Rusty. "Every night, I travel through moonbeams and peek into children's dreams. I make sure the bad dreams go away and the good dreams stay safe."
Lily's messy curls bounced as she nodded. "I have bad dreams sometimes."
"That's why I came tonight," said Rusty. He reached into the Moon Pool with both paws and pulled out three glowing berries that shone like tiny moons.
"These are Sunshine Vitamins," he explained. "They grow in the deepest part of the Moon Pool, where starlight touches the water. Eat one before bed, and you'll only have sweet dreams."
Lily took the berries carefully in her hand. They were warm and pulsed softly, like tiny hearts.
"Thank you, Rusty!" she said.
The fox nuzzled her hand with his soft nose. "Your hair reminds me of sunshine," he said. "It's perfect for catching good dreams."
Lily ate one Sunshine Vitamin that night. She dreamed of flying over oceans made of lemonade, where fish made of rainbows swam through clouds of cotton candy.
The next morning, Lily woke up smiling. Her hair was still messy, but now she knew its secret - it was a dream-catcher, perfect for a friend who was a night spy.
Every summer night, Lily and Rusty met by the Moon Pool. He gave her Sunshine Vitamins, and she shared her dreams with him. They became the best of friends, guardians of good dreams together.
And sometimes, if you look closely at a child with messy hair, you might just spot an orange fox watching from the bushes, making sure their dreams are sweet and safe.
