The Fox Who Shared the Moon

Lily discovered the secret pool on a Tuesday, when the sun painted everything gold. It wasn't an ordinary pool. This one sparkled like someone had spilled a jar of diamonds across the water.

"Hello there," said a deep voice.

Lily jumped. Behind a fern sat the biggest bear she'd ever seen. He looked friendly, with kind brown eyes and a round belly.

"I'm Barnaby," the bear rumbled gently. "Are you here for the magic too?"

"What magic?" Lily whispered.

"The pool magic!" A flash of red darted past. A fox appeared, her fur the color of autumn leaves. "I'm Fiona! Every full moon, the pool gives us a special vitamin berry that makes dreams come true."

Lily's eyes widened. "Really?"

"But there's only ONE berry," Barnaby said sadly. "And Fiona and I both need it."

Fiona's tail drooped. "I want to fly like the birds. Barnaby wants to be small enough to fit in his grandmother's favorite rocking chair."

Lily thought hard. "Maybe there's another way?"

That night, under the glowing moon, they gathered around the pool. A single glowing berry floated to the surface. It shone like a tiny star.

Barnaby reached for it. Then he stopped. He looked at Fiona, who was watching the birds soar overhead with such longing in her golden eyes.

"You take it," Barnaby said. "My grandmother would love me no matter what size I am."

Fiona gasped. "But YOUR dream—"

"A true friend doesn't need magic to be happy," Barnaby smiled.

Tears filled Fiona's eyes. She nudged the berry toward Barnaby instead. "No. YOU take it."

Lily had an idea. "What if we share it?"

They split the berry into three pieces. Barnaby grew small enough to rock in his grandmother's chair. Fiona could glide on the wind. And Lily? She could understand what all animals were saying.

"The real magic," Fiona said, soaring above them, "wasn't the berry at all."

"It was friendship," Barnaby finished, grinning from his grandmother's lap.

And every full moon after, they returned to the sparkling pool—not for magic berries, but just to be together. Which was the greatest magic of all.
