The Fox Who Read Palms

Elena sat across from Marcus at their tenth anniversary dinner, spinach stuck in his teeth, laughing at something she'd said. She should have been happy. She was happy—mostly. But her palm itched, the way it always did before a job.

"You okay?" Marcus asked, reaching for her hand across the table. "Your hands are shaking."

"Fine," she said, pulling away. "Just... too much wine."

That's when she noticed it: the Fox Security badge clipped to his briefcase, half-hidden under their table. Fox. Her codename, too—not that he knew that. They were both spies, both liars, both pretending to be something else in their own marriage.

Later that night, she watched him sleep. His palm lay open on the pillow, and she traced the lifeline she'd memorized a thousand times. Ten years of marriage, and somehow they'd never really touched each other's truths.

The next morning, she found his phone unlocked. Messages from Fox headquarters. Target: ELENA. Codename: SPINACH. And there it was—her entire file, her real history, everything she'd hidden from him for a decade. He hadn't married her by accident. He'd been assigned to her.

But the final message made her breath catch: "I can't complete the mission. I love her. I'm getting out."

Elena sat at their kitchen table, her palm pressed against her chest, and realized she had a choice. She could report him. She could run. Or she could finally be honest with someone in her life for the first time.

When Marcus walked in, she didn't reach for the knife in her boot. She reached for his hand instead.

"I know you're Fox," she said.

His face fell. "And you're Spinach."

"Was Spinach," she said. "Now I'm just your wife. If you still want that."

Marcus laughed—a real laugh, not one of his practiced ones. "I've wanted out for years. I just didn't know how to tell you."

They sat together as the sun came up, two spies who'd finally stopped spying on each other. The spinach incident at dinner suddenly made sense—he'd been trying to work up the courage to confess everything.

"So what now?" he asked.

Elena looked at their joined palms, fingers intertwined. "Now we start over. No more secrets. No more codes. Just us."

"That," Marcus said, "might be the most dangerous mission we've ever attempted."
