The Fox Who Ran with the Moon
Fiona was a small red fox with fur the color of autumn leaves. Every night, she watched the moon rise over the sleepy farm beyond the forest. But tonight, the moon looked frightened.
"What's wrong?" Fiona called softly.
"The Big Bull is running loose!" the moon cried. "He's chasing all the little stars away!"
Fiona's ears perked up. She knew the Big Bull—Barnaby was his name. The farmer said he was the grumpiest bull in the whole valley. But Fiona had noticed something: Barnaby always looked lonely.
The clever fox crept to the farm's edge. There was Barnaby, thundering across the pasture, his great hooves pounding the earth. But he wasn't chasing stars. He was chasing his own shadow.
"Excuse me!" Fiona called.
Barnaby skidded to a stop. "Go away, little fox. I'm too big and clumsy to have a friend."
"Friends come in all sizes," Fiona said wisely. "Why are you running?"
Barnaby sighed, his warm breath making clouds in the cool air. "I'm trying to run fast enough to catch the moon. It looks so lonely up there, just like me."
Fiona's clever mind spun like a top. "Then let's run together!"
Together, the fox and the bull ran across the meadow. Fiona darted like flame, while Barnaby galloped like thunder. Side by side, they weaved through wildflowers and jumped over babbling brooks. The moon smiled down at them, growing brighter and brighter.
"Look!" Barnaby laughed. "The moon isn't running away anymore!"
"That's because it finally found a friend down here who looks up at it every night," Fiona said. "And so did you."
Barnaby lowered his massive head gently. "Thank you, Fiona. I think I was running in circles until you came along."
From that night on, every creature on the farm saw something magical: a tiny fox running beside a giant bull, their shadows dancing together under the moonlight. And the moon? It never looked lonely again.
Sometimes the best friends come in the most unexpected packages, and sometimes you just need someone to stop running in circles and start running together.
