The Fox Who Made Friends with the Sphinx

Leo was a small fox with the brightest orange fur in all of Egypt. Every morning, he would trot through the golden desert, his coat shining like a tiny sun against the sand. But Leo had no friends to play with. The other foxes said he was too adventurous, too curious about the mysterious stone structures rising from the dunes.

One day, Leo's twitching nose led him to the Great Pyramid. It was enormous, casting a long shadow as the sun began to set. But something made Leo stop. At the pyramid's base sat a creature he had only heard about in stories — a sphinx.

The sphinx had the body of a lion and the head of a human, but her stone face looked sad. She had been guarding the pyramid for thousands of years, and not once had anyone stopped to say hello. Everyone was too afraid of her riddles.

Leo's fluffy orange tail wagged. "Hello!" he barked happily.

The sphinx's eyes widened. No one had ever spoken to her so cheerfully. "Greetings, little fox. I am Cleo. Would you like to hear my riddle?"

"I would love to," said Leo, sitting down and tilting his head.

Cleo smiled. "What has orange hair but is not a fox? What has four legs but is not a lion? What is made of stone but has the warmest heart?"

Leo thought and thought. His bright orange ears perked up. "A sphinx who wants a friend!"

Cleo's stone face beamed. "You are correct! And indeed, I have waited so long for a friend like you."

That night, under a sky full of twinkling stars, the fox and the sphinx shared stories and laughed together. Leo made a promise to return every day, and Cleo's heart finally felt complete. Sometimes, the best friendships are the ones we never expected to find — even between a tiny orange fox and an ancient stone sphinx guarding a pyramid.
