The Fox Who Loved Green

Felix the fox had a secret. Every night, when the moon peeked through clouds, he tiptoed to Mrs. Green's garden. But not to steal chickens—Felix loved something strange.

He loved spinach.

Each leaf tasted like sunshine and rain. Felix would munch happily, his tail curled around him like a fuzzy orange blanket.

One evening, a calico cat named Callie spotted him. Her yellow eyes widened.

"Foxes don't eat vegetables!" Callie meowed, perched on a fence post. "They chase mice and birds!"

Felix swallowed a mouthful of crispy spinach. "I'm different. Want to try?"

Callie sniffed daintily, then took a bite. Her ears perked up. "It's... crunchy! Like tiny green vegetables that taste like springtime!"

Suddenly, something stirred among the pumpkin vines. A groan echoed through the garden.

"GRAAAAAAINS."

Callie's fur stood on end. "Is that—"

A zombie pumpkin wobbled toward them! Its vines reached like leafy fingers. Its face was stitched together with rough twine.

"BRAAAAAINS," it moaned, then paused. "Actually, could I have some spinach? Being a zombie vegetable makes me crave other vegetables."

Felix gasped. "You're a ZOMBIE? But you're so polite!"

The pumpkin's twig mouth curved into something like a smile. "My name is Zuke. I was enchanted by a lonely wizard. He wanted someone to share his garden with."

Callie's eyes softened. "That's the saddest thing I've ever heard."

Felix nudged his spinach leaves toward Zuke. "Here, friend. Food tastes better when shared."

The three of them feasted under silver stars. When the wizard appeared, his eyes filled with tears at the sight of friendship blooming in his garden.

"I only wanted to not be alone," he whispered.

"You aren't," Felix said gently. "Not anymore."

The wizard broke the spell, and Zuke became a real pumpkin vine—but he stayed. And every evening, the fox, the cat, and the magical pumpkin shared spinach together, because the best meals are the ones enjoyed with friends.

Moral: Friendship can grow in the most unexpected places, even between the unlikeliest of friends.
