The Fox Who Loved Baseball

Lily loved baseball more than anything. Every afternoon, she'd grab her glove and walk to the stream behind her house, tossing the ball up and catching it again. The water sparkled in the sunlight, and Lily dreamed of having someone to play with.

One day, something rustled in the bushes. A bright orange fox poked his head out, watching the ball sail through the air. When Lily tossed it high, the fox darted forward, caught it in his mouth, and dropped it perfectly at her feet.

"You like baseball too?" Lily gasped.

The fox nodded his head, and to Lily's amazement, he could play! He ran fast as lightning, fielding grounders and leaping into the air to catch flies. Soon, kids from all over came to watch the girl and her fox play baseball by the water.

But some grown-ups said, "Foxes belong in the wild, not on baseball fields." They wanted to take her friend away.

Lily stood in front of the stream where they'd first met. "Friendship doesn't have rules," she declared. "He's my teammate, and I'm his."

The fox chattered happily, and the other kids cheered. Even the grumpy neighbor who'd complained smiled when the fox tipped his cap.

They learned something magical that summer: the best friends can be found in the most unexpected places, whether by water's edge or home plate. And sometimes, if you're lucky, your best teammate might just have a bushy orange tail.
