The Fox Who Liked Glowing Apples

Lily loved walking home from school through the meadow. One afternoon, she tripped over a tree root and her iphone tumbled out of her backpack. It slid across the grass and disappeared into a hollow beneath an old oak tree.

She reached inside, but her fingers brushed something soft and warm instead. A pair of amber eyes gleamed back at her.

"That's a very shiny apple," said a voice from the shadows.

A rusty red fox crept out, nose twitching with curiosity. He sat beside her iphone, which lit up with a notification.

"It's not an apple," Lily giggled. "It's a phone. I use it to talk to my friends."

The fox tilted his head. "You trap your friends in a glowing box?"

"No! I just... I just send them messages."

The fox pawed at the screen, and suddenly the iphone projected a tiny holographic butterfly that fluttered around his nose. He yipped with delight, chasing it in circles.

"You see?" Lily smiled. "It makes magic too."

For an hour, Lily and the fox played—chasing holographic butterflies, making the screen sparkle with stars, watching tiny foxes dance across the glass. The fox, whose name was Rusty, showed Lily the best places to find wild strawberries and the secret path rabbits used.

When the sun began to set, Rusty nudged her iphone back toward her.

"Your magic box wants to go home," he said wisely. "But real friends don't need glowing screens. They just need to show up."

Lily nodded. She clicked a photo of Rusty instead, her new fox friend.

"Will you be here tomorrow?" she asked.

"Every day at sunset," Rusty promised, vanishing into the oak's roots.

Lily walked home with her iphone safely in her pocket, but she didn't look at it once. She was too busy thinking about Rusty, and the very best kind of friend—the kind who shows up in person, not just on a screen.
