The Fox Who Learned to Roar

foxspybullzombie

Marcus shuffled through sophomore year like a zombie, his brain fried from honors chem and the endless scroll of TikToks at 2 AM. Being fifteen felt like trudging through waist-deep mud every single day—until The Incident in the cafeteria.

The bullies had cornered Maya against the snack machines. Jason, a six-foot varsity linebacker who charged through life like an angry bull, was in her face about something she'd supposedly said. Maya stood frozen, that deer-in-headlights look Marcus knew too well.

Marcus should've kept walking. That's what you did when you were basically invisible anyway. But something snapped inside him—maybe it was the way Jason's cronies laughed like this was all some big joke.

"Hey," Marcus heard himself say. His voice cracked. Fantastic. "Leave her alone."

Jason turned slowly. "Excuse me?"

"I said back off." Marcus's heart hammered against his ribs like it was trying to escape his chest. But he remembered something his dad had told him: sometimes you have to be a fox—smart, strategic, willing to outwit instead of overpower. "Before I go find Vice Principal Harris and tell him about the 'spyware' app you guys use to screenshot people's DMs. Pretty sure that's illegal."

The color drained from Jason's face. Marcus had no idea if that app existed, but the bluff worked.

"Whatever," Jason muttered, stalking away with his crew.

Maya exhaled. "That was... actually kind of epic."

"I was totally bluffing," Marcus admitted, suddenly aware of how awkward his hands felt.

"Didn't matter." Maya grinned. "You stood up to him. That takes guts."

For the first time all year, Marcus didn't feel dead inside. The zombie fog lifted, replaced by something brighter—like maybe being a teenager didn't have to mean being invisible. Maybe you just had to channel your inner fox when life came at you like a bull.

"Want to sit with us at lunch?" Maya asked. "My friends think you're cool now."

Marcus smiled. "Yeah. I'd like that."
