The Fox Who Knew Secrets

pyramidsphinxfoxfriend

Lily had always dreamed of visiting Egypt. When her parents finally took her to see the great pyramids, she could hardly believe her eyes. The enormous stone triangles rose from the golden sand like mountains built by giants.

"I'll be right back!" Lily called, spotting something rustling near a dune. She chased after it—a little orange fox with the brightest eyes she'd ever seen.

"Wait! Please wait!" Lily panted.

The fox stopped and turned. To Lily's surprise, it spoke. "You're faster than you look, small human."

Lily gasped. "You can talk?"

"I can do many things," said the fox with a wink. "I'm Felix. And you're Lily—I heard your mother calling."

"Will you be my friend?" Lily asked.

Felix's tail wagged. "I've never had a human friend before. But friends help each other, and I need help. The Great Sphinx has lost its smile."

Lily had seen the Sphinx—that giant statue with a lion's body and a human head. It did look sad.

"Why is it sad?"

"Children have forgotten how to wonder," Felix explained. "The Sphinx smiles when children believe in magic. Can you help me make it smile again?"

Lily nodded vigorously.

Felix led her through secret passages inside the smallest pyramid, where torches lit themselves as they passed. They found an ancient chamber filled with glowing crystals.

"Touch the biggest one," Felix whispered. "And think of your most wonderful dream."

Lily closed her eyes and imagined flying over the pyramids on a magic carpet. When she touched the crystal, golden light burst forth, streaming through cracks in the pyramid walls.

Outside, the Sphinx's stone face began to glow. Slowly, gently, the great statue smiled.

"You did it!" Felix cheered, jumping around her. "The Sphinx hasn't smiled in a thousand years!"

Lily hugged the little fox. "We did it together. That's what friends do."

"Indeed," said Felix. "And now you have a friend in Egypt forever. Whenever you return, just whistle, and I'll come."

That night, Lily fell asleep under the stars, dreaming of pyramids and magic foxes, knowing that friendship is the greatest wonder of all.
