The Fox Who Knew My Secrets
I'd spent forty-five minutes on my hair — specifically, the front pieces that refused to cooperate — but according to my Instagram feed, everyone at Maya's party was having the time of their lives without me.
"You're not actually going to spy on them, right?" Jess asked, already knowing the answer.
"It's not spying if they posted it publicly," I said, though it felt like stalking. Lurking. Watching from the sidelines while everyone else lived their main character moments.
My phone buzzed. Someone posted a story from the party. I zoomed in on the photo, scrutinizing everything — the outfit, the lighting, the way people stood in groups that I wasn't part of. Pathetic.
I threw on my jacket and slipped out the back door. Not to crash the party — I wasn't that desperate — but to walk. To clear my head.
That's when I saw the fox.
Orange fur glowing under the streetlight, watching me with eyes that felt way too judgmental. And behind it, a cat — Mrs. Gable's tabby — crouched in the bushes, tail twitching.
"You following me?" I whispered.
The fox tilted its head. Then something wild happened — it walked toward the cat, and they touched noses. Like, actual friendship moment.
I froze. Growing up, everyone said foxes and cats were natural enemies. That they couldn't coexist. That they were too different. But here they were, breaking all the rules, not caring what anyone expected.
My hair was probably a mess. My outfit wasn't party-worthy. I wasn't part of the cool crowd. But maybe that was okay.
I pulled out my phone and deleted Instagram. Not forever — I'm not crazy — but just for tonight. The fox and cat dispersed into the darkness, and I walked home feeling lighter.
Tomorrow I'd deal with FOMO and social hierarchies and hair that refused to behave. Tonight, I'd just be.
