The Fox Who Hit a Home Run
Finnegan was a clever little fox with reddish-orange fur and a very big dream. Every summer afternoon, he would creep through the tall grass to watch the children playing baseball in the meadow. How he wanted to join their game!
One hot day, Finnegan was hiding behind first base when something magical happened. The baseball came sailing right toward him! Without thinking, he batted it with his paw—and the ball flew over the fence, into the sparkling pond beyond.
"Whoa!" shouted the children. "That fox can play!"
But when Finnegan ran after the ball, he tripped on a log and SPLASH! landed right in the water. He wasn't hurt, but he felt embarrassed. The children laughed—not mean laughter, but happy surprised laughter.
"Are you okay, Mr. Fox?" called a girl named Lily.
Just then, something green and bubbly rose from the pond. "Blaaaargh," it groaned.
The children gasped. "A zombie!" screamed someone.
But Finnegan, who was now swimming gracefully toward his ball, noticed something wonderful. The zombie wasn't scary at all. It was a friendly pond spirit made of algae and magic, and it was holding the baseball!
"Play ball!" bubbled the zombie spirit, tossing the ball to Finnegan.
Finnegan caught it in his mouth and swam back to shore. The children cheered!
"That zombie just wants to play too," Finnegan realized. And he was right.
From that day on, Finnegan the fox became the official mascot of the meadow baseball team. And sometimes, when the ball went into the pond, the friendly zombie spirit would splash it back, making the game even more magical.
Finnegan learned something important: sometimes the things that seem scary at first are just new friends waiting to be made. And that's the best home run of all.
