The Fox Who Guarded the Stars
Lily loved to explore the forest behind her house. Every day after school, she would follow the winding paths, discovering new flowers and interesting rocks. But her favorite discovery was the fox.
The fox had bright orange fur that glowed like sunshine, and the kindest amber eyes Lily had ever seen. She named him Rusty. Every afternoon, Rusty would appear at the edge of the trees, waiting for her with his fluffy tail wagging.
One rainy afternoon, Rusty wouldn't play their usual game of chase. Instead, he kept looking toward the old part of the forest where the trees grew thick and shadowy.
"What is it, Rusty?" Lily asked, wiping rain from her forehead.
Rusty nudged her hand gently with his wet nose and started walking toward the dark woods. Lily followed, her heart beating fast with excitement. They walked until the trees parted, revealing something amazing.
A small golden pyramid sat in a clearing, shining even though there was no sun. It was only as tall as Lily, and it hummed with a soft, magical sound.
Rusty sat beside it proudly.
"Have you been a spy?" Lily laughed, scratching his ears. "Watching over this treasure all by yourself?"
The fox seemed to nod. He tapped the pyramid with his paw, and suddenly the golden surface rippled like water. Inside, Lily could see tiny swirling stars—real stars, captured and glowing!
"It's beautiful," she whispered.
Then she understood. Rusty hadn't been playing games all those weeks. He had been protecting something magical. He had chosen to trust her with his secret.
"I'll help you guard it, Rusty," she promised, wrapping her arms around his warm neck. "Being a spy is hard work for one fox."
Rusty licked her cheek, and together they sat in the rain, watching the stars dance inside their golden pyramid, the best of friends keeping the most wonderful secret in the world.
