The Fox Who Guarded the Stars
Lily loved running through Golden Meadow every evening just as the sun began to paint the sky purple and orange. Her bare feet pattered against the soft grass, and her laughter floated like music on the breeze.
But lately, she'd noticed someone watching her. A fox with fur the color of autumn leaves would sit on the hill, his bright amber eyes following her every move.
"He's a spy!" Lily told her grandmother. "He's spying on me!"
Her grandmother just smiled. "Some spies guard secrets worth keeping."
One evening, instead of running past the fox, Lily stopped. The fox didn't run away. Instead, he stood up, twitched his fluffy tail, and looked at her with what seemed like a grin.
Then he started running.
Lily couldn't help herself — she ran after him. Over hills they went, through a patch of glittering fireflies, past a stream that sang like tiny bells. The fox moved so gracefully, it was like he was dancing.
Finally, they reached the top of Starlight Hill. The fox stopped and sat down, looking up at the darkening sky.
Lily sat beside him, breathless. "Why were you spying on me?"
The fox made a soft sound, almost like a laugh, and pointed his nose toward the first star appearing above.
Then Lily understood. The fox hadn't been spying on her at all. He'd been waiting to show her this — the moment when the first star blinked awake, like a tiny eye opening from a long sleep.
"You're not a spy," Lily whispered, scratching behind his ears. "You're a star-guardian."
The fox nudged her hand with his soft nose. From then on, every evening when Lily went running through the meadow, the fox would join her. Together they'd race to Starlight Hill to greet the first star of evening.
And Lily learned that sometimes, the things we think are spying on us are really just waiting to share something magical.
