The Fox Who Guarded Moonlight

friendpoolfox

Lily discovers a secret pool in the forest behind her house, its water shimmering like liquid stars. She leans closer and gasps — the pool doesn't show her reflection. Instead, it swirls with colors she's never seen, painting pictures of places that don't exist.

A soft rustle makes her jump. From behind an ancient oak, a fox emerges. His coat burns bright as sunset, and his eyes hold the wisdom of a hundred years. Lily holds her breath, expecting him to run. Instead, he sits and tilts his head, as if waiting for something.

"You can see the magic too, can't you?" Lily whispers. The fox's tail swishes once — agreement.

Every day that summer, Lily returns to the pool. The fox, whom she calls Rusty, becomes her friend. He shows her which berries taste sweetest, which paths lead to secret meadows, and how to listen to the wind's stories. The pool shows them wonders together: cities floating on clouds, trees that grow crystals instead of leaves, oceans made entirely of moonlight.

But one afternoon, Lily arrives to find the pool's surface dull and gray. Rusty paces nervously, his ears flat against his head. The magic is fading because no one has believed in it enough.

Lily knows what to do. She cups her hands, fills them with water, and whispers every wish she's ever made, every dream she's ever dreamed, every wonderful thing she's imagined. She pours them back into the pool. Color explodes across the surface — brighter than ever.

Rusty nudges her hand with his wet nose. His fox-grin says thank you.

As summer ends, Lily learns that magic doesn't need to be believed by everyone. It only needs one person to believe with their whole heart. And sometimes, the best friends aren't human at all.

Years later, Lily's own children find the pool. They never see the fox, but sometimes, just sometimes, they glimpse orange fur flickering between trees, and the water always shimmers like stars when they arrive.
