The Fox Who Found a Friend

Copper the fox had never known a friend. His golden-red fur blended perfectly with autumn leaves, but inside, he felt all alone. Every morning, he trotted to the river's edge, watching the ripples dance across the water, wishing someone would splash beside him.

One misty dawn, something appeared through the fog—a fluffy brown creature with floppy ears and a wagging tail that wouldn't quit. It was a dog named Barnaby, who had wandered too far from his farm.

'Hello!' called Barnaby, his tail thumping happily against the tall grass. 'I'm looking for adventure. Want to come?'

Copper's heart fluttered. A friend! Maybe.

They explored together until they reached the moonlit swimming hole. 'Last one in is a zombie!' Barnaby barked playfully, then leaped into the water with a magnificent splash. Copper had never seen a dog swim before—Barnaby's legs paddled like he was running on invisible clouds, his ears flopping with every stroke.

Copper dipped a paw in. The water felt magical, like liquid silver. He took a deep breath and jumped.

They swam and splashed under the stars, two unlikely friends gliding through the water as if they'd known each other forever. When they emerged, shaking water from their fur in sparkling droplets, Copper knew his lonely days were over.

Sometimes, he learned, the best friends are the ones you never expected to find. And that night, as they curled up together under the old oak tree, Copper dreamed of all tomorrow's adventures—with his first real friend by his side.
