The Fox Who Forgot Magic

Lily knelt by the edge of the silver stream, the cool water tickling her fingertips. Summer vacation meant adventure, and today she had found something extraordinary.

A rusty orange fox lay on the mossy bank, looking for all the world like a little zombie fox. His fur stuck up in wild tufts, his eyes were half-closed, and he moved in slow, jerky motions. Most foxes were sleek and swift, but this one seemed to have forgotten how to be a fox.

"Are you okay?" Lily whispered, pulling out her iPhone to take a picture for her nature journal. The fox just blinked at her, his tail giving a tiny, exhausted thump against the ground.

Then Lily noticed something shimmering in the water. Not a reflection – something magical. Tiny glowing fish were darting around, leaving trails of starlight wherever they swam. The fox stared at them too, and suddenly Lily understood.

"He's not sick," she realized aloud. "He's LOST his magic!"

Foxes were supposed to be clever and quick and full of tricks. This one had lost his fox magic, and without it, he moved like a zombie. Lily knew what to do. She had read about animal magic in her storybooks.

She filled her cupped hands with the enchanted water and held it out to the fox. "Drink this," she urged. "The water remembers what real foxes are like."

The fox lapped the water eagerly, and something amazing happened. His fur smoothed down glossy and bright. His eyes opened wide, sparkling with intelligence. He stood up tall and gave a playful yip, suddenly full of energy and grace.

He nosed Lily's hand with gratitude, then did a magnificent leap over the stream – showing off his recovered magic. Lily snapped a picture just as he jumped, capturing the moment perfectly.

"I'll be your friend," she promised. "Come back whenever you need more magic water."

The fox visited every summer after that, never looking zombie-like again. But sometimes, just between friends, Lily would share her lunch and he would share his stories of the forest, proving that friendship is the most powerful magic of all.
