The Fox Who Fixed My Hair
My hair was supposed to be sunset pink, not whatever color this was. Like, I'd spent three hours bleaching it in my bathroom, following that YouTube tutorial exactly, and now I looked like a failed science experiment. And today was the annual neighborhood padel tournament—basically the social event of the summer.
"You look... bold," Maya said, suppressing a laugh as we walked toward the courts.
"Bold is one word for it," I muttered, pulling my cap lower.
The padel courts were already packed. Everyone from school was there, including Tyler, who I'd been crushing on since seventh grade. And then there was Lily, aka "the Fox"—so nicknamed because she could talk her way out of anything and always got what she wanted. Today she'd secured the prime court time and somehow convinced everyone she was padel royalty despite barely knowing how to hold a racket.
"Nice hair," Tyler called out as we approached. Was he being sarcastic? I couldn't tell.
Then it happened. During our first match, I went for a hard smash near the fence, tripped, and crashed into the water fountain behind the courts. Soaked. My pink-streaked hair plastered to my face. Everyone staring.
But instead of laughing, Lily—The Fox herself—yelled, "That's how you make an entrance!" and splashed into the fountain after me, fully clothed, dragging two other people in with her. Within minutes, half the tournament was in the water, laughing and screaming, and suddenly my hair disaster wasn't a disaster at all.
"You started a revolution," Tyler said later, sitting beside me on the edge of the fountain. "Also, your hair actually looks kind of cool wet."
Maya just rolled her eyes. "The Fox strikes again. She knew exactly what she was doing."
And that's when I realized: sometimes your worst moments become your best stories, sometimes your friends are secretly geniuses, and sometimes having weird hair just means you're brave enough to try new things. Also, I learned that padel is way more fun when you're not actually playing it.
