The Fox Who Dreamed of Swimming

Fiona the fox had never liked water. Every time she approached the babbling brook near her den, her nose would wrinkle. Water was for fish, not foxes. Or so she thought.

One hot summer afternoon, Fiona trotted to her favorite rock to rest. But someone else was there — a large brown bear with twinkling eyes.

"Hello, little one," said the bear. "I'm Barnaby."

Fiona's tail puffed out nervously, but Barnaby's warm smile made her brave. "I'm Fiona."

Barnaby pointed toward the brook. "I was just going swimming. Would you like to join me?"

"Foxes don't swim," Fiona said firmly.

"That's not true," Barnaby chuckled. "My grandmother knew a fox who loved to splash. But I understand if you'd rather watch."

Fiona sat and watched as Barnaby lumbered into the water. To her surprise, he moved gracefully — his thick fur floated like a cloud, and he looked as if he were dancing with the ripples.

Suddenly, something flashed beneath the surface. A goldfish with scales like tiny jewels darted between Barnaby's paws.

"That's Goldie!" Barnaby called. "She's the bravest fish I know. Last month, she swam all the way upstream to visit her sister."

Fiona inched closer. The water didn't look so scary when someone so small was brave enough to explore it.

"Could I... maybe try just my paws?" Fiona asked.

Barnaby nodded. "Goldie started with just her fins too."

Fiona dipped one paw in the cool water. Then another. Soon she was splashing happily while Goldie swam circles around her.

"I'm doing it!" Fiona cried. "I'm swimming!"

That evening, Fiona returned to her den with something new — not just wet fur, but a lesson in her heart. Sometimes the things we think we can't do are simply things we haven't tried yet. And with a little courage and good friends, even a fox can learn to swim.
