The Fox Who Crashed Our Pool Party

zombiefoxpool

Maya felt like a zombie as she floated in the shallow end, her phone waterproof-bagged beside her. This was supposed to be the party of the summer, but honestly? She'd rather be binge-watching her favorite show and rotting in bed. The whole squad was here—even Ryan, who she'd been lowkey crushing on for months.

"Yo Maya, you good?" Ryan asked, swimming over with that effortless grace that made everyone's heart do a little flip.

"Yeah, just... existential crisis," she joked back, trying to play it cool even though her brain was definitely not chill.

Suddenly, a rustling sound came from the bushes. Everyone froze. Was someone about to crash the party?

Instead, a literal fox trotted out, its rusty-red coat catching the golden hour light. It stood at the pool's edge, eyeing them like *it* was the one judging *their* choices.

"No freaking way," someone whispered.

The fox—because apparently this was now her life—boldly grabbed a half-eaten bag of chips from a nearby table and sprinted off toward the woods with its prize. The whole pool erupted in chaos. Some people were screaming, others were laughing, and suddenly Maya wasn't feeling like a zombie anymore. She was just... present.

"Did that actually happen?" Ryan asked, cracking up.

Maya laughed harder than she had all summer. The party kept going, but something shifted. The fake Instagram-perfect vibe cracked open, and real moments started happening. People stopped performing and started actually talking. Even Ryan ended up sitting next to her on the pool edge, discussing whether the fox was a sign of the apocalypse.

"Maybe," Ryan said, looking at her with actual interest instead of his usual polite-but-distant energy. "Or maybe the universe just knew we all needed to lighten up."

The sun set, turning the pool water into liquid gold. Maya grabbed a chip from the bag—the fox had left half—and realized something: sometimes you need a random animal to steal your snacks to remember what being alive actually feels like.
