The Fox Who Cracked the Pyramid

Maya stared at the gym signup sheet, her iPhone screen glowing with notifications she couldn't bring herself to check. Padel Tournament. Winner gets crowned King & Queen of the Fall. The pyramid, as everyone called it — the invisible hierarchy that determined who sat where at lunch, who got invited to parties, who mattered.

"You signing up?" Jordan asked, leaning against the gym door. He'd been her friend since kindergarten, back when social pyramids were just things in Egypt.

Maya snorted. "Right. Because I'm definitely going to challenge Chloe for the top spot."

Chloe, whose Instagram feed was a masterclass in curated perfection. Chloe, who'd been playing padel at some exclusive club since seventh grade.

"So? Do it anyway," Jordan said. "Unless you're, what? scared?"

Maya grabbed the sharpie. Her hand shook as she wrote her name below Chloe's perfectly loopy signature.

"You're actually gonna do it," Jordan said, grinning. "That's some fox-level energy right there."

The day of the tournament, the gym smelled like floor wax and teenage anxiety. Maya watched Chloe dominate her first match, all graceful swings and perfectly coordinated outfits. But then something weird happened. Chloe's iPhone slid across the court mid-game, and when she lunged for it, her racket caught her opponent in the nose.

Game. Set. Drama explosion.

The pyramid trembled.

Maya won her first match. Then her second. The third match came down to a tie-breaker, her opponent some varsity player who'd underestimated the girl with the worn Nike shoes and tangled hair. When Maya's final shot sailed past her opponent's racket, she didn't feel like royalty. She felt like herself.

She checked her phone later. Notifications from people she'd barely spoken to since middle school. Nice game! Where'd you learn to play like that?

Jordan high-fived her so hard her palm stung. "Told you. Fox moves."

"Whatever," Maya said, but she was smiling. "Still not joining your stupid pyramid though."

"Who said anything about joining?" Jordan raised an eyebrow. "I think you just cracked it."
