The Fox Who Couldn't Swim

Finn was the fox with the most magnificent copper-colored hair in the entire forest. It shimmered like autumn leaves in the sunlight, and he was quite proud of it. But there was one problem — Finn was afraid of water.

One hot summer afternoon, Finn watched his friends playing by the river. Oliver the otter was splashing about, having the time of his life. Finn wanted to join them, but his paws stayed planted on dry land.

"Come on, Finn!" called Oliver. "The water feels wonderful!"

Finn shook his head. His beautiful hair would get wet and heavy. What if he couldn't stay afloat? What if the river was too deep?

That's when he saw it — a baseball bobbing in the middle of the river. It must have fallen from the children's park on the hill. A little rabbit named Rosie was crying on the riverbank.

"That's my favorite ball," she sniffled. "I'll never get it back."

Finn looked at the baseball floating farther away. He looked at Rosie's tears. He looked at the rushing water that made his stomach flutter.

Then he thought about how brave his friends were every day, simply by being themselves. Oliver swam even though the current was strong. The birds flew even though they were small. Everyone faced something scary.

Finn took a deep breath. His magnificent hair would dry. But a friend's sadness might last longer.

"I'll get it," Finn said, surprised by his own brave voice.

He stepped into the cool water. It wasn't so bad. He paddled deeper. The river gently cradled him. Swimming was like flying, but with water instead of air! His wet hair plastered against his head, but he didn't mind.

Finn reached the baseball and grabbed it with his teeth. He swam back to shore, proud as any explorer who ever discovered a new land.

"You did it!" Rosie cheered, hugging her recovered ball. "You're the bravest fox ever!"

Finn shook himself dry, spraying water droplets like tiny diamonds in the sun. His hair would fluff out again tomorrow. But today, he had discovered something much more important than perfect fur — he had discovered that the bravest thing you can do is try something new, especially when a friend needs help.

"Tomorrow," Finn told Oliver, "you're going to teach me how to dive."

And from that day on, the fox with the magnificent copper hair became known as the fox who wasn't afraid of anything — especially not a little swimming adventure.
