The Fox Who Could Pitch

Lily loved her messy red hair. It bounced when she ran, which was all the time. Every Saturday, she played baseball in the park with her golden retriever, Buster, who chased every ball even if it rolled into the woods.

One afternoon, Buster's bark echoed strangely. Lily followed him past the old cable that hummed with electricity, deeper into the forest than she'd ever gone. There, sitting on a tree stump, was a fox with fur like autumn leaves.

"I'm Rusty," said the fox. "And I've been watching you play. I can throw a baseball faster than anyone."

Lily gasped. "Foxes can't play baseball!"

"Watch me." Rusty grabbed a ball with his tail and flung it. It sailed over the treetops!

Every day for a week, Lily, Buster, and Rusty practiced. The fox taught them secret animal tricks. Buster learned to catch with his paws. Lily learned to run like the wind.

On Saturday, Rusty wanted to join the game. But when the other children saw the fox, they laughed. "Foxes can't play baseball!"

Rusty's ears drooped. He turned to leave.

"Wait!" Lily stepped forward. "Rusty is our friend. And he's an amazing pitcher. Let him show you."

The fox wound up and threw a perfect strike. Then another and another. The children cheered. Rusty grinned, his tail twitching with joy.

That day, they learned that friendship doesn't care what you are — fox, dog, or human. What matters is heart.

Every Saturday after that, something magical happened. A fox, a dog, and children played baseball together under the cable that hummed with friendship instead of electricity. And Lily's messy red hair bounced with joy, knowing she had found the most wonderful friends in the world.
